Interview with Dr. Ford

What do you love most about your work with executives?

They're smart people with their eye on results. I love the learning and mental stimulation of working with other bright business people. And, they appreciate finding a smart person who can show them how to remove the obstacles to getting the results they want.

What influenced your choice of profession?

In a way, my career is simply the product of my parents' two professions. My father was a management professor and business owner, educated in management when Frederick Taylor's theory of efficiency based on time and motion studies was popular. I learned to be efficient before I learned to read! My mother is a psychologist, trained during the height of the human potential movement when Abe Maslow's theory of self-actualization was popular.

And if you cross those two, you get what?

Someone who loves to create a smoothly running organization and believes deeply in the positive potential of human beings. So, when I talk about creating organizations that work, it encompasses the idea that the organization is achieving results efficiently and that the people in the organization are growing and learning.

You're a bundle of contradictions! Another contradiction in your work is your pragmatic business orientation combined with your "think tank" intellect.

Yes. I'm ultimately a pragmatist and a business person. And, I love the intellectual elegance and rigor of sophisticated analytical tools. Building a useful model of a complex organizational problem is truly pleasure for me. Then, those "think tank" tools must be made to serve the business. We have to keep applying those complex tools to the complex problem until we arrive at a simple solution with enough leverage to solve the problem.

Why does that matter?

Success. It's all about success. People like to be successful in their work. My work makes that possible. So, it matters economically and pragmatically as well as in human terms.
